Who’s Got Game Basketball host Sierra Leone National Basketball team in London
Who’s Got Game hosted Sierra Leone National Basketball Team over the past 2 weeks, running a two week skills development programme (on and off the court). The purpose of this programme was to equip the players with skills to help them contribute to active citizenship in Sierra Leone.
Sierra Leone has one of the worst youth employment rates in the world with over 800k young people unemployed, and according to UNESCO Sierra Leone has an adult literacy rate of 32.43%.
This exchange programmes focuses on giving participants basketball development and skilling as well as employability skills and cognitive skill development. We put together site visits and special experiences which are aimed at maximising development and providing hope and inspiration for all involved, we are also fundraising to build a suitable basketball facility for the players back home as all their main basketball facilities were destroyed during the mudslide which occurred 2 years ago.
The programme partnered with the Houses of Parliament, Black Prince Trust, AEG, the British Council and The Sierra Leone Ministry of Sport and Government.
Managing Director and Founder, Dayo Okewale said: “This has been a great honour for us to host for the Sierra Leone national team, the first time ever any national team from Sierra Leone has taken part in a programme abroad. With all that’s happened in the country, we believe this will contribute heavily to its redevelopment.”
